The great thing about receiving sample packs is the convenience.

A neat little package arrives in the mail from a brand you’ve never heard of, you pick out a few small bottles, try the product and decide if you like to go ahead and get larger bottles of the beard oil recipe you loved.

That’s exactly what you can do with Detroit Grooming Co.

You can get a pack their beard oils in small bottles so that you try out everything before you decide on buying a larger one.

I tried some of their other products and the Corktown Beard Oil (which I’m sure is their most popular product anyway) caught my attention.

Before this review, I didn’t have the chance to get to know this brand and I’m really glad I bought their products.

I looked into the brand to find out more about them.

As the name suggests, the company is based in Ferndale, Detroit. It’s a barber shop with an online presence and beard grooming products that range from colognes to shaving stands.

The company started a few years ago from the barber shop and is now selling products through Amazon and it’s own webstore.

All the men’s grooming products are masculine, scented, reasonably affordable and completely eco-friendly.

The Corktown beard oil is part of a range of beard oils they sell.

They have seven different varieties (presumably based on added fragrances) which are all sold in either one of two packages.

There’s a 1 fluid ounce bottle that resembles a whisky bottle. Then there’s a 0.5 fluid ounce bottle that sells for almost half and looks like a small test tube with a lid.

All seven varieties have a unique scent.

  • Teakettle smells like Vanilla & Mahogany Teakwood.
  • Belle Isle has orange and lavender oils mixed in.
  • CEDAR SPRINGS has cedarwood fragrance mixed in, as does MACKINAC.
  • Mackinac also has peppermint fragrance added in to set it apart.
  • Orchard Lake has vanilla mixed with orange to give it a unique scent.
  • The one I like most is Corktown. Corktown has a rare blend of Tobacco and vanilla fragrances on a cedarwood essential oil base. It smells heavenly and is the reason this is the most popular beard oil from the brand.
  • Finally, there’s Downtown, which is the unscented version. Men who hate scented beard products would probably love the simple mixed oil.

You can get all seven grooming oils as part of pack at a steep discount, but if you’re like me you’ll get the sample pack and pick one that you like most.

All the base oils are essentially the same, so there shouldn’t be any difference in terms of performance.

All beard oils from Detroit Grooming Co. contain:

  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Sunflower Seed Oil
  • Safflower Seed Oil
  • Rice Bran Oil
  • Apricot Kernel Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Wheat Germ Oil

Corktown Performance

Corktown is named after a part of Detroit and the brand tried to capture some old world charm with this unique blend.

I must say the results are spectacular.

The standout fragrance here is Vanilla mixed with Tobacco. Opening the lid is like cutting off the end of a classy Cuban cigar.

The scent is sweet and mild, puts you in a good mood right away and stays on for hours without becoming annoying.

Performance-wise, it’s much the same as all the other beard oils Detroit Grooming Co sells.

The base oils (almond and sunflower) work to protect and soften the facial hair and skin. Vitamin E is added in for extra nourishment and Avocado oil to deliver a nutrient punch that will help your hair grow faster.

The packaging also suggested Wheat Germ oil was included.

I didn’t know much about this particular ingredient so I decided to do some research.

Turns out wheat germ is pretty good for beard hair. The oil has, what they call ‘emollient properties’, which means it helps heal hair damage. This works to prevent split ends and breakage when your beard grows too long.

It traps in moisture and helps prevent frizziness. I’m glad they included it in.

All the ingredients are right on the label and each one helps your beard in a specific way.

I found that the oil was really non-greasy. I mean, applying it was easy enough and the beard oil helps with grooming the beard, but there wasn’t this stickiness that you get with a lot of other beard oils.

My one complaint is that the oil is a bit too thin. It gets absorbed really easily into the skin and hair, which means it’ll pretty much disappear after a while.

But again, this is something good for other bearded men who don’t like the sense of beard oil on their face.

I don’t like using too much beard oil because it can make the beard look glossy and overdone, but I guess that’s needed with this oil.

Now, this is the perfect oil for you if your hair is frizzy if you’re like me. My beard hair simply will not stay in one place and drys out quickly. The Corktown oil really helps to tame the frizziness and bring it all under control.

Final Thoughts

Detroit Grooming Corktown Beard Oil Review

Detroit Grooming Co. has a unique take on men’s grooming that stays true to its roots.

The brand appeals to men looking for classy and scented grooming products that are straightforward yet distinct.

Their flagship Corktown beard oil is now one of my favorite beard oils on the market, and I can see myself using it regularly.

The pleasant aroma and simple ingredients are really hard to ignore.

It’s a beard oil made that contains all the essential ingredients and a combination of scents that are hard to find. It’s easy to appreciate how premium and light the oil feels against the skin and hair.

The results were absolutely fantastic and I would gladly recommend this to anyone looking for a good beard product.
